China updates crop pest reporting system
Time:2009/3/10 7:43:09   Hit:3054

By Duncan Poupard

China’s Ministry of Agriculture has issued clarifications and amendments to its system for reporting the occurrence and control of serious plant diseases and insect pests on crops. The system was introduced in 2008, as a means of providing scientific evidence to help the Ministry take measures to control crop pests and diseases.

All provincial agricultural departments are responsible for reporting the occurrences of pests on their respective crop areas, and the information is to be aggregated by a national agricultural service centre. The system of prevention is mainly aimed at reporting the occurrence of migratory flying pests, infectious diseases and any pest that has a relatively large impact on agricultural production.

This year, weekly reports are required for occurrences of: wheat stripe rust (Puccinia striiformis) between February and May; for Sclerotinia spp in spring rape during March and April; for locusts and serious rice pests and diseases between May and September; for beet webworms (Loxostege sticticalis), corn borers (Ostrinia nubilalis) and cotton bollworms (Helicoverpa armigera) between June and August; and for potato late blight (Phytophthora infestans) between May and August. Should a pest or disease outbreak prove particularly harmful to crops, daily reports should be sent to the service centre.
